The Obliteration Room by Yayoi Kusama 草間彌生《オブリタレーションルーム》パビリオン・トウキョウ2021

2021/7/1-2021/9/5の期間に開催されているパビリオン・トウキョウ2021。９つのパビリオンのうちのひとつ、草間彌生の《オブリタレーションルーム》に行ってきました。

《オブリタレーションルーム》は、参加型のインスタレーションです。真っ白い部屋ー壁も置かれた家具も全て白ーに、来訪者が水玉のシールを貼り付けていきます。好きな場所にペタペタと貼っていき、部屋には水玉が増殖していきます。青、緑、黄色、オレンジ、赤といった色とりどりの水玉。

私たちが部屋の中に水玉を貼り付けていくことでこの《オブリタレーションルーム》が出来上がっていくので、それはいつまでも作り続けられる「未完の作品」です。そして、誰もこの作品が最終的にどのような状態になっていくのか分かりません。

最初の真っ白な空間は、真っ白な中に部屋そのものが沈み込んでしまったように見えます。そして、色とりどりのシールが貼られたあとの空間は、色の中に部屋が沈み込んでしまうかのように見えます。

その中に置かれた私。私はシールを貼り付ける「作り手」のひとりではありますが、「私」はその空間に呑み込まれるかのようです。そこでは、「私」、あるいは「私」と「他者」との境界が消え去っていきます。

We visited Yayoi Kusama's Obliteration Room, one of the nine pavilions at Pavilion Tokyo 2021, which is being held from July 1, 2021 to September 5, 2021. 

The Obliteration Room is a participatory installation. Visitors put polka-dot stickers on the white walls and white furniture in the room. 

As we stick the stickers anywhere we like, the polka dots multiply in the room. Blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. 

This Obliteration Room is created as we stick polka dots in the room. It is an unfinished work that is being created endlessly. And no one knows how this work will turn out in the end. 

The blank space without stickers looks as if the room itself has sunk into the pure white. And the space with the colorful stickers looks as if the room itself has sunk into the color. 

We enter in the room. I am one of the "creators" of this installation, but "I" seem to be swallowed by the space. There,  "I" or the boundary between "I" and "others" disappears.
